Round or Hourglass: Same Size, Different Fit
The short answer: a bra size describes volume, not shape. Two women who measure the same can carry that volume differently: rounder or wider, higher or lower, fuller at the top or at the bottom. And two bras at the same size hold it differently: a moulded cup, a soft cup, a wide cut, a lean cut. So the same size fits differently, and a fitting reads what the tape cannot.
"What may fit the round body may not fit properly for the hourglass shape, even though you're the same size." That is one of our fit advisors, in a short we made because so many women asked why their friend's bra was wrong on them.
Three ways the same size fits differently
- Where the fullness sits. Fuller at the bottom: a moulded cup with lift (Seamless Contour Bra) fills at the top and looks right; a soft cup may gap. Fuller at the top: a soft, unlined cup (Un-Lined Bra) follows it; a moulded cup may cut in.
- How wide the bust sits. Set wide or pointing outward: a wide-coverage cut (Signature Seamless Bra, Sure Cover Bra) brings it to the centre; a lean cut (Seamless Air Bra) leaves it where it is (wide coverage or lean cut).
- The torso under it. A lean ribcage with a fuller bust, common here, needs a deeper cup for the band than most imported charts allow. That is what the SHAPE chart and the Contour's draft are built around (a bra built for the Bengali body).
What a fitting reads
Two numbers give the letter (how to measure at home). The fitting then looks at four things the numbers miss: whether the cup gaps or spills (spilling or gaping), whether the band sits level (band riding up), whether the straps are carrying weight (straps digging), and whether the centre of the bra sits flat against the chest. Then it picks the cut, not just the size (what happens in a fitting).
Why a new style needs a new fitting
Your letter stays the same across SHAPE's seamless styles, but the cut changes: the Air is lean and soft, the Contour is moulded and wide, the Sure Cover is wide and heavily padded. If you have only ever worn one of them, trying the others in a fitting is the quickest way to find the one that matches your shape, not just your size (the five everyday bras compared).

Questions women ask us
Can I tell my shape myself?
Roughly. Stand side-on without a bra: if the fullness is below the nipple line, you are fuller at the bottom; above it, fuller at the top. Front-on: if the busts sit apart, wide-set. Then send us the two numbers and the note.
Is one shape "better"?
No. Every shape has a cut that suits it; that is the whole point of a range (why we never talk about bras).
My size changed after a baby. Shape too?
Often, yes. Re-measure and re-fit; the letter and the cut may both move (and re-measure when a bra is done).
