Straps Digging In? Four Causes, Four Fixes

The short answer: straps dig because they are carrying weight the band was supposed to carry. A band that fits holds the bust on its own; the straps only keep the cup in place. Loosen the straps, fix the band, and the marks go. If the marks stay, you need a wider strap, not a tighter one.

In our survey of 651 Bangladeshi women, 54 percent ticked strap trouble. Most had done what feels logical: shortened the straps to get the lift back. That is exactly what deepens the groove.

The two-minute test

Slip both straps off your shoulders. Does the bra stay where it was? Then the band fits and the straps were only over-tightened. Does it drop? Then the band is too loose or too stretched, and no strap setting will fix it (the five-sign fit test).

Four causes, in order

1. The band is too loose. The most common one. On a seamless style, between two letters go up one for the cup, and check the band sits level and snug on the loosest hook. If a bra has ridden up at the back, the front has dropped, and the straps take the load (why a band rides up).
2. The bra is past its life. After six to nine months of daily wear the band has stretched for good. You tighten the straps to compensate without noticing (how long a bra should last).
3. The cup is too small. A cup that does not hold the whole bust pushes the weight upward into the strap. Side spill is the tell (spilling or gaping).
4. The strap is too thin for the bust. A fuller bust on a thin strap will mark even at the right size. That is a design problem, and the fix is a wider strap.

What to change

• First, the straps themselves. Loosen them until you can slide two fingers under, flat. Straps are for position, not lift.

• Then the bra.
