Why We Never Talk About Bras
The short answer: a bra is on your body a minimum of sixteen hours a day, longer than any other piece of fabric you own, and it is the one thing we are conditioned never to talk about, even when it hurts. It hurts a lot of us. That silence is why so many women in their twenties have back pain and do not know their size. SHAPE exists to end the silence, one fitting at a time.
Alright, fam. I know bras are a taboo topic. It is women's bodies; we do not want to talk about it. Let me try to humanise this problem for a second.
Sixteen hours
Think about one product a woman wears for at least sixteen hours a day. Some of us sleep in it. It is the closest fabric to our body for the most hours of our life, and we are trained never to mention it when it is uncomfortable, when it gives us a rash, when it digs in. And the truth is, it does. In this weather, with this humidity, with skin conditions, with all our different body types, it does.
The salwar kameez double standard
If I go to buy a salwar kameez with three friends, my size might be M, hers XL, hers XS, and nobody blinks. We are strict about it: if the shoulder drops a little, we say no, it will not look right. We think that hard about the outer layer, the colour, the fit, the thing that has nothing to do with back pain or posture. And we give none of that thought to the one garment underneath that decides both. That is why so many girls in their early twenties now have back pain. We do not even know our size.
The shoe test
I use this one so that men understand it too. If a shoe cuts into my foot, I give it a day, two days, three at most. I will not wear it for a week and think, well, it cuts, but I will manage. But a bra? Women wear the same one 365 days a year, for years, with the strap cutting in, and say nothing. Your mother, your khala, your sister, sitting next to you right now, may be one of them. Nothing you wear is supposed to cut into you. Not fabric, not shoes, not a bra. Pain is not normal.
"I don't fit into this bra"
Here is the sentence I want you to notice. When a shoe does not fit, a person says, "this shoe doesn't fit me." When a bra does not fit, a woman's first response, almost always, without thinking, is "I'm not fitting into this bra." As if something is wrong with her body. No. Two things are true instead: you do not know your size, because nobody ever measured you; and the right size was never offered to you, because most of the market does not carry it or does not know it. The bra did not fit you. That is the whole sentence.
What to say instead
Say it out loud, to us if to no one else: this bra hurts, and I want the one that does not. Then let a woman measure you. Two numbers, in a private room or on WhatsApp, and you never have to buy. That is the conversation this whole brand was built to have. Here is what happens in a fitting, and here is why I started.
