Where to Buy Bras in Dhaka: Honest Guide
The short answer: women in Dhaka buy bras in five places: the markets (Dhaka College Market, Nurjahan Market), boutiques that carry imports, on a trip abroad, from online sellers, and from fit-first stores. Markets are cheapest and fastest; imports fit a different body; a proper fitting is rare anywhere. Wherever you go, ask four questions before you pay.
When we surveyed 651 women in Bangladesh, 165 bought at Dhaka College Market and 136 at boutiques, and more than a third had bought bras abroad, mostly in India, Thailand and the United States. Here is what each option gives you, honestly, including ours.
The markets: Dhaka College Market, Nurjahan Market
What you get: the lowest prices in the city, huge choice, and it is done in an hour. What you give up: a fitting (the shopkeeper guesses, often loudly), cup sizes (many labels carry only a band number), a trial room, and any exchange. Wires that pop and bands that loosen in weeks are the usual complaints in 25 common bra problems. Good for a quick spare; hard for finding your size.
Boutiques with imported stock
What you get: known brands, nicer surroundings, sometimes a trial room. What you give up: fit for a Bengali body. Imported bras are drafted for a longer torso and a smaller bust, so the band sits wrong before you have paid for it, and few boutiques measure you. Prices run high for the wrong shape.
The trip abroad
What you get: a fitting, in the good department stores, and range. What you give up: a year between purchases, no exchange from Dhaka, and again a cut for another body. A third of the women we asked had done it; most still had a drawer of bras that did not fit.
Online sellers
What you get: convenience and price. What you give up: certainty. Many resell market or imported stock, ask you to guess your size, and have no written exchange. Here is what to check before you buy online.

- Will you measure me? If the answer is a glance and a guess, walk on.
- Is there a trial room? A bra tried over a kameez tells you nothing.
- What is the exchange rule, in days? If it is not written down, it does not exist.
- Who is this cut for? If nobody can answer, it was not cut for you.

Is Nurjahan Market bad?
No. It is cheap and fast, and for a spare it is fine. It is the wrong place to find your size, because nobody there will measure you.
Are imported bras better quality?
Often well made, and cut for a different body. Quality you cannot fit is not quality you can wear.
