How to Wash a Bra So It Keeps Its Stretch
The short answer: wash a bra by hand in cold or room-temperature water with a little mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, press it in a towel, and dry it flat or hung by the centre in the shade. Never wring it, never hot water, never a dryer. Done this way, a daily bra lasts nine months instead of six (how long a bra should last).
Elastic has two enemies, heat and twisting. Our founder's answer to "why does it loosen so fast" is those two words. Everything below follows from them.
The five rules
- Cold water only. Heat relaxes elastic and it does not fully recover. Room temperature from the tap is right; bucket water left in the sun is not.
- Hands, not the machine. A machine twists and stretches the band on every cycle. If you must, a mesh bag, delicate cycle, cold, hooks fastened, and accept a shorter life.
- Fasten the hooks first. Open hooks snag the knit and pull threads. Fastened, they cannot.
- Never wring. Squeeze gently, then roll the bra in a dry towel and press. The towel takes the water; the band keeps its memory.
- Dry in shade, flat or by the centre. Hanging by a strap stretches the strap. Direct sun and a hot rooftop do what hot water does.
The two-minute routine
Basin of cold water, a capful of mild detergent, bra in, swirl, leave for ten minutes, swirl again, rinse twice, press in a towel, hang. Detergent left in the fabric is one of the three causes of itching (bra rash and itching), so the second rinse matters.
The pads
On styles with a removable pad, slide the pad out, wash it separately the same way, and press it flat to dry; a pad dried creased stays creased. Put it back once both are fully dry. On moulded styles (Seamless Contour Bra, Plus Size Sculpting Bra) the cup is the pad; press it into shape while damp and dry it cup-up.
How often
After every two wears in Dhaka's heat, every wear if you have sweated through it. Sweat and detergent both weaken elastic if left in the fabric. Two bras in rotation, alternating days, last far longer than one worn daily, because elastic recovers overnight.
Questions women ask us
Can I use ordinary washing powder?
Yes, a little, fully dissolved before the bra goes in. Rinse twice. Bleach and hot soaking, no.
Do the hooks rust?
Not if the bra is dried properly. A bra left damp in a bag or a closed drawer is where rust starts. Dry fully before storing.
How should I store it?
Flat, hooks fastened, cups nested or open, not folded in half with one cup pushed into the other; that creases a moulded cup for good.
