Straps Keep Slipping? It's Usually the Band, Not the Straps
The short answer: A strap slips because something else is loose. Either the band is too big, so the whole bra rides up and the straps lose their angle, or the cup is too big, so there is nothing for the strap to hold. Tighten the band first. If they still slip after that, get measured.
You push the strap back up at the bus stop, at your desk, in the middle of a conversation. Most women deal with this for years and assume their shoulders are the wrong shape. Usually the shoulders are fine.
Work through it in this order
- Tighten the straps but only until you can slide two fingers under them. Tighter than that and they dig in without fixing anything.
- Check the band. Can you pull it more than about an inch away from your back? Then it is too loose and that is your answer.
- Check the cup. Any wrinkling or gaping in the fabric means the cup is too big, so the strap has slack to give.
- Check the hooks. On the tightest hook with a bra over six months old? The band has gone. Replace it.
- Get measured. If all four are fine and it still slips, the strap position is wrong for your shoulders and a different style will fix it.
Why the band controls the straps
Around eighty per cent of the support in a well-fitted bra comes from the band. The straps are there to stabilise, not to carry. When the band is firm and level, it anchors the whole garment and the straps sit at the angle they were designed for.
When the band is loose, the bra lifts at the back. The straps now run at a shallower angle across your shoulders, closer to the outside edge, and gravity does the rest.
Styles with straps set closer in
| Bra | Sizes | Strap |
|---|---|---|
| Seamless T-Shirt Bra | M (32-34) to 2XL (38-40) | Set closer to the centre, adjustable. Sized by band range. |
| Sure Cover Bra | M to 3XL | Wider strap, full coverage. Good if weight is the issue. |
| Seamless Contour Bra | M to 3XL | Wide adjustable strap on a moulded cup. |
| Plus Size Sculpting Bra | XL to 5XL | Widest straps we make, for a fuller bust. |
What not to buy
Do not buy a bra with narrower straps to fix slipping. Narrow straps slip more, not less, and they concentrate weight into a smaller area so they also dig in.
Strap clips that pull the straps together at the back work, but they are a patch on a loose band. They are worth it for one sleeveless outfit, not as a daily solution.
Questions women ask us
Should I tighten the straps all the way?
No. Two fingers should slide under them. Beyond that you are asking the straps to do the band's job, and you will get shoulder grooves instead.
One strap slips and the other does not. Why?
Most women have slightly uneven shoulders and slightly uneven breasts. Adjust each strap separately. They do not have to match.
Do racerback styles help?
They do, because the straps cannot slide outward. Easy Fit Sports Bra is the one to look at if you want that for everyday wear.
