Straps, Hooks and Sliders: How to Adjust a Bra Properly

The short answer: Hook a new bra on the loosest setting, adjust the straps so two fingers slide under, and check the band sits level. Adjust the bra before you adjust the size. If it still does not sit right after adjusting, the size is wrong.

'Hook kontar use korbo?' - we get this question almost daily. Most women hook on the tightest setting from day one, which leaves no room for the band to stretch over time.

The five-point adjustment

  1. Hooks: Start a new bra on the loosest (outermost) hook. As the band stretches over weeks, move inward one hook at a time. This extends the bra's life from a few months to the full 6 to 9 months.
  2. Straps: Slide two fingers under each strap at the shoulder. If they dig, loosen. If they fall, tighten. Straps stretch too, so recheck every few wears.
  3. Band level: Run a finger along the back band. It should sit straight, level with the front. If it rides up, the band is too loose.
  4. Gore (centre): The piece between the cups should sit flat against your chest. If it floats, the cup may be too small.
  5. Cup check: Lean forward and settle your bust into the cups. No spillover at the top, no gaps at the bottom.

Sliders and rings

The small plastic or metal piece on each strap is a slider. Push it up to shorten the strap, down to lengthen. If your bra has a ring where the strap meets the cup, that ring should sit at the edge of your shoulder, not on your collarbone or halfway down your back.

The Seamless T-Shirt Bra has smooth, adjustable straps and a two-hook back that is easy to adjust even without help.

Questions women ask us

Should I always hook on the loosest setting?

Yes, when the bra is new. This gives you two or three hooks to tighten into as the band stretches with wear and washing.

My straps keep falling off one shoulder. What is wrong?

One shoulder is usually slightly lower than the other. Tighten that strap a little more. If it still slips, try a racerback converter clip.

How do I know when a bra is too old to adjust?

If the band is on the tightest hook and still rides up, or the elastic has gone soft and no longer springs back, it is time for a new one. Most bras last 6 to 9 months with regular wear.
