Side Bulge Under a Fitted Top: Side Wings, Wide Coverage, One Cup Up

Sure Cover Bra by SHAPE Lingerie, full side coverage

The short answer: Bulk at the side means the cup is too small or the wing too narrow. Go up one size in a seamless bra and pick a style with extended side wings. The Seamless Contour Bra and Sure Cover Bra both have wide wings that hold side tissue in place under fitted tops.

Side bulge is not a body problem. It is a bra problem. The cup is too small, the band is too loose, or the wing is too narrow. Fix the bra and the bulge goes away.

Why Side Bulge Happens

Three things cause that fold of tissue at the side of your bra.

First, the cup is too small. When there is not enough room in the cup, breast tissue has to go somewhere. It pushes out at the sides, and you see a line under your top.

Second, the band is too loose. A loose band lets the whole bra shift. The cups slide forward and the wings ride back, leaving tissue uncovered at the side.

Third, the wing is too narrow. Even if the cup fits, a narrow wing ends before your tissue does. The edge of the bra cuts into soft tissue and creates a visible line.

The Fix: One Size Up and Wider Wings

Start by going up one size in a seamless bra. SHAPE seamless bras have stretch across the cup, so one size up gives you both a wider cup and a wider wing.

If that alone does not fix it, look for a style with extended side wings. The wider the wing, the more tissue it holds in place. Extended wings smooth the line from your cup all the way to your back, with no gap where tissue can escape.

Try the bra under a fitted top at home before you decide. If the side is smooth, you have the right size and style.

Two Styles That Fix Side Bulge

The Seamless Contour Bra (M to 3XL) has one of the widest wings in the SHAPE range. The extended side panel wraps past the bust line and holds tissue flat against the ribcage. It comes in Coffee, Beige and Black.

The Sure Cover Bra (M to 3XL) is built for full coverage. The name says it. Wide wings, high sides, and a smooth finish under fitted tops. It comes in Maroon, Brown, Beige and Grey.

Both styles have wide, smooth wings that extend past the side of the cup. If your current bra ends where your tissue does not, one of these will fix it.

Quick Fit Check at Home

Put on your bra and a fitted top. Stand in front of a mirror with your arms at your sides.

Look at the side seam of the top. If you see a fold or a bump where the bra wing ends, the wing is too narrow or the cup is too small.

Now lift your arms. If tissue spills over the top or side of the cup, you need to go up a size.

A well-fitting bra with wide wings sits flat against your ribcage. There is no line, no fold, no bump. The top lies smooth.

Questions women ask us

What causes side bulge in a bra?

The cup is too small, the band is too loose, or the wing is too narrow. Any of these lets breast tissue push out past the edge of the cup and create a visible fold under your top.

Does going up a cup size fix side bulge?

Usually yes. In SHAPE seamless bras, going up one size gives you a wider cup and more side coverage. If that does not fix it, try a style with extended side wings like the Contour or Sure Cover.

Which SHAPE bra has the widest side wings?

The Seamless Contour Bra and the Sure Cover Bra both have extended side wings. The Contour and the Sure Cover. Both run M to 3XL.

Can I exchange a bra if the side bulge does not go away?

Yes. SHAPE offers a seven-day exchange on unworn and unwashed bras. Exchange only. Panties are excluded.
