One Side Bigger? Fitting a Bra When Your Breasts Aren't the Same
The short answer: Most women have one breast slightly larger than the other, and a noticeable difference is still within normal. The method is simple: fit the larger side so nothing is compressed, then even out the smaller side with the removable pad. On most SHAPE seamless styles the pad slides out of one cup only.
Women write to ask about this and almost always describe it as a problem with their body. It is not. Asymmetry is the normal state, and the only thing that needs solving is which bra and which cup.
The method
- Measure and fit to the larger side. Never fit the smaller side and hope. A cup that compresses the larger breast will spill, crease and hurt.
- Check the band first as always. Firm and level, around eighty per cent of the support.
- Even out with the pad. On most of our seamless bras the pad is removable. Leave it in on the smaller side and take it out on the larger side, or add it only to the smaller side.
- Adjust the straps separately. They do not have to match. The strap on the smaller side usually wants to be slightly tighter.
This last point is confirmed practice from our fit team rather than theory. It is what works in the room.
Which styles make this easiest
| Bra | Sizes | Why it helps here |
|---|---|---|
| Seamless Air Bra | M to 3XL | Removable pad, very light. Easiest to balance. |
| Seamless Contour Bra | M to 3XL | Moulded cup holds an even shape over an uneven bust. |
| Sure Cover Bra | M to 3XL | Full coverage, so a difference is less visible at the top edge. |
| Un-Lined Bra | M to XL | Non-padded, so it follows your shape. Choose only if you are not evening out. |
What to avoid
A soft, unstructured cup shows the difference most, because it takes whatever shape it is given. If evening things out matters to you, a moulded cup does more than any amount of adjusting.
Also avoid buying two different sizes and wearing the smaller one. It is a reasonable-sounding idea and it ends in a band that does not match across the back, which fails at the thing bands do.
When to mention it to a doctor
Asymmetry you have always had is just your shape. A change that is new, rapid, or comes with a lump, skin change or pain is worth showing to a doctor. We are a bra shop and we will not pretend otherwise: we can fit you well, and we do not diagnose anything.
Questions women ask us
How much difference is normal?
A difference of up to a cup size is very common. We see it every week in the fitting room.
Can I buy a single bra in two cup sizes?
Not as a made item, no. The removable pad is how we solve it, and it works well.
Which side should I measure?
The larger one. That is the side that has to fit.
Will a fit advisor comment on it?
No. It is one of the most ordinary things we see. Our advisors are trained to measure and not to remark on your body.
