Thin Straps or Thick Straps: What Each One Does

Close-up of the wide adjustable strap on the SHAPE Seamless Contour Bra in black

The short answer: A thin strap exists to stay out of sight, and it is good at that. It is not good at carrying weight, because the same load through less width means more pressure per square centimetre. A thick strap spreads the load. Choose by what you need the strap to do, not by how it looks.

Thin straps look more elegant on a hanger, so they get chosen for that reason and then blamed for digging in. They are not badly made. They are being asked to do a job they were not cut for.

The physics, briefly

The weight is whatever it is. A strap carries part of it, and the pressure you feel is that weight divided by the area it is spread across. Halve the width and you double the pressure at your shoulder.

This is why a fuller bust in thin straps produces grooves, and why the same woman in a wide strap feels nothing. Nothing changed except the area.

One important caveat: the strap should not be carrying much weight in the first place. Around eighty per cent of support comes from the band. If your straps are doing the work, widening them is treating a symptom.

Which to choose

Strap Good at Not good at Style
Thin Staying hidden under sleeveless and wide necklines Carrying a fuller bust over a long day Un-Lined Bra, Seamless Air Bra
Medium, adjustable An everyday balance of both Nothing in particular Seamless Contour Bra, Seamless T-Shirt Bra
Wide Spreading load, long days, fuller bust Hiding under a sleeveless cut Sure Cover Bra, Longwear Bra
Widest A fuller bust that needs real support Anything with a narrow neckline Plus Size Sculpting Bra

The two-finger rule

Whatever the width, you should be able to slide two fingers under the strap at your shoulder. If you cannot, the straps are too tight, and the usual reason is that they have been tightened to compensate for a loose band.

So the order is always the same: band firm and level first, then loosen the straps until two fingers fit. Most women find the bra feels more supportive after doing this, which is counterintuitive and correct.

Strap position matters as much as width

A strap set closer to your neck stays under a sleeveless or wide neckline. A strap set out toward the shoulder edge shows, and also slides off more easily. This is a design feature of the style rather than something you can change much by adjusting.

Seamless T-Shirt Bra sets its straps closer in, which is why it is our usual answer for a wide neckline. It runs M (32-34) to 2XL (38-40).

Questions women ask us

Will thin straps stretch out faster?

They have less material, so wear shows sooner. The band is still what fails first on almost every bra.

Are wide straps always more comfortable?

For a fuller bust, usually. For a smaller bust with a well-fitted band, you may not notice the difference.

Can I pad a thin strap?

Strap cushions exist and they work as a short-term fix. If you need them daily, the band is the real problem.

Which style has the widest straps?

Plus Size Sculpting Bra, which runs XL to 5XL.
