Where Support Really Comes From: The Band, Not the Straps
The short answer: Around 80 percent of a bra's support comes from the band, not the straps. If your straps are digging in or sliding off, the problem is almost always a band that is too loose or a cup that does not fit. Tighten the band first.
'Straps ta tighten korle support pabo' - we hear this at fittings every week. But straps are not the load-bearing part. They hold the cup in position. The band does the lifting.
The band carries the weight
A well-fitted band sits level across your back, snug enough that you can slide two fingers under it but no more. When the band is the right size, it anchors the bra to your ribcage and distributes the weight of your bust evenly. Straps just keep the cup angle steady.
If the band rides up in the back, it is too loose. If it digs in and leaves red marks, it is too tight or the cup is too small and the tissue is pushing the band out of place.
What about wires?
Wires frame the bust and keep the cup shape, but they do not create lift. That comes from the band tension and the cup structure. Padding and moulded cups give shape; the band holds them where they belong. This is why SHAPE's seamless bras, which have no wire, still offer genuine support through a firm, wide band.
How to check your band fit
| Sign | What it means | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Band rides up at the back | Too loose | Go down a band size or use a tighter hook |
| Straps dig into shoulders | Band not carrying the weight | Tighten the band; loosen the straps |
| Gore (centre piece) floats | Cup too small or band too big | Try one cup up or one band down |
| Band rolls or folds | Too tight or wrong shape | Go up one size; try a wider band style |
The Sure Cover Bra has a wide four-hook band from M to 3XL. The Seamless Contour Bra has a thick four-hook band with wide straps, up to 3XL.
Questions women ask us
Should I tighten my straps for more support?
No. Tighten only enough that the strap stays in place without digging. If you need more support, go down a band size rather than pulling the straps shorter.
Why does my bra ride up in the back?
The band is too loose. When you hook a new bra, start on the loosest hook. If the band still rides up on the loosest hook, the size is too big.
Can a seamless bra support a fuller bust?
Yes. A firm, wide band on a seamless bra gives real support without a wire. The Sure Cover Bra and Contour Bra both use wide four-hook bands designed for fuller busts.
How do I know my band size?
Measure your ribcage just under the bust with a tape measure. The number in inches is your band size. Come to any SHAPE store for a free, private fitting if you are not sure.
