Do Bra Hooks Rust in Dhaka Humidity? How to Care for Them
The short answer: Hooks rust when they stay damp, and in Dhaka that is easy to do. The three causes are wringing the bra out, folding it away while the hooks are still wet, and drying it in a pile with other washing. Rinse it, press the water out, and hang it with the hooks open and apart.
A bra that is otherwise fine but has an orange mark at the hooks is a Dhaka problem, and it is almost always about drying rather than about the bra. Monsoon is when we hear about it most.
What causes it, in order
- Wringing. Twisting the band forces water into the hook and eye, where it then sits. It also stretches the elastic, so it is doubly worth stopping.
- Folding it away damp. The hooks end up closed and pressed against fabric, with no air.
- Drying in a pile. The hooks stay in contact with wet cloth for hours.
- Drying indoors in monsoon with no air movement. The band dries; the metal does not.
How to wash and dry a bra so this does not happen
Wash: by hand, in cool water, with a mild detergent. Ten minutes of soaking is plenty.
Rinse: until the water runs clear.
Do not wring. Press the bra between your palms, or lay it in a towel and press. This is the single most important step, for the hooks and for the elastic.
Dry: hang it by the band, not by the straps, with the hooks unfastened and separated so air reaches them. In the shade, not in direct sun, which degrades elastic.
Store: only once fully dry, including the hooks. Fasten them before storing so they do not catch on other fabric.
Why there are so many hooks in the first place
Three rows, usually. They exist because your ribcage changes: through the month, through the day, and across a year. You start a new bra on the loosest hook and move inward over the six to nine months as the band relaxes.
That is also the clearest sign a bra is finished. On the tightest hook and still riding up means the elastic has gone, and no care routine brings it back.
If rust has already appeared
A light mark on the metal can sometimes be cleaned off, but rust that has transferred onto the fabric is permanent, and a hook that has corroded will eventually tear the band. At that point it is a bra at the end of its life rather than a repair job. Rotating three bras instead of wearing one daily is what prevents the next one.

Questions women ask us
Can I machine wash a bra?
We would rather you did not. If you must, use a mesh bag, fasten the hooks, cold water, and the gentlest cycle.
Is a dryer alright?
No. Heat is the fastest way to destroy elastic, and it bakes any remaining moisture into the hooks.
Which bras have the fewest hooks to worry about?
Easy Fit Sports Bra has none; it pulls on over the head. It is cotton-spandex, so it takes longer to dry.
How long should a bra last with good care?
Six to nine months of regular wear. Rotating three gets you to the top of that range rather than the bottom.
