If I Ever Have a Daughter: Why Monoshita Started SHAPE

SHAPE Lingerie founder and team celebrating at an outdoor evening gathering

The short answer: Her mother died when she was young, and one thought stayed: if she ever has a daughter, that girl should not grow up with the same shame around her own body. That is why Monoshita started SHAPE.

My name is Monoshita Ayruani, and I started SHAPE in 2019.

My mother passed away when I was young. I grew up without the conversation most girls have about their bodies, about what is normal, about what they should wear and why. I figured things out on my own, the way most women in Bangladesh do: quietly, with guesswork, and with a lot of discomfort I assumed was just part of being a woman.

The thought that stayed

If I should ever have a daughter, she should never grow up with the same shame I grew up with. She should know her body. She should know what fits her. She should not have to whisper the word 'bra' or hide it on the balcony.

That thought would not go away. And eventually, it became SHAPE.

What SHAPE is, at its core

It is a bra company. But the bra is the vehicle, not the destination. The destination is a world where a woman knows her size, wears something that fits, and does not feel ashamed of any of it. We are not there yet. We may not be there for a long time. But every fitting, every conversation in Girl Talk, every woman who says 'I did not know bras could be comfortable' is proof that it is worth building.

Questions women ask us

How big is SHAPE now?

Seven stores in Dhaka, over 200,000 women fitted, a 51,000+ member community called Girl Talk. We started with one bra in three sizes. Today we have more than a dozen styles, from M to 5XL.

Do you still do fittings yourself?

Not every day, but I still fit women when I am in the stores. The fitting room is where I learn the most about what women need.

What is the hardest part of running SHAPE?

Changing a conversation that has not happened for generations. The product part is solvable. The culture part is slow, and you cannot ship it in a box.
