The Double-Bust Line Under a Fitted Top, and How to Lose It
The short answer: That second line across the top of your bust means the cup is too small, cut too low for your shape, or both. Tissue that does not fit inside the cup sits above its edge and the fabric of your top outlines the join. Go up a cup size, or move to a higher-cut style such as Mesh Minimizer Bra.
You notice it in a photograph, or under a fitted t-shirt: two lines instead of one. The instinct is to pull the top looser or stop wearing it. The bra is what to change.
What is actually happening
A cup has a top edge. If the cup holds everything, the only line is the smooth outer curve of your bust. If the cup is too small, the part that does not fit has to go somewhere, and it goes up and over that edge. Now there are two curves with a crease between them, and anything fitted shows the crease.
The same thing happens in a cup that is technically big enough but cut low across the top, which is common in plunge and demi styles.
Four fixes, in order of how often they work
| Fix | When it is the answer |
|---|---|
| Go up one cup size | Most common. The cup is simply too small, even if the band is right. |
| Move to a higher-cut cup | The cup is big enough but cut too low. A minimizer or full-coverage style fixes it. |
| Check the band is not too big | A loose band lets the whole bra ride up, so the cup sits lower than intended. |
| Scoop and settle | Lean forward, lift each breast fully into the cup, then stand. Often reveals that nothing was wrong but the putting-on. |
The styles cut higher
Mesh Minimizer Bra is cut higher across the top and has mesh side panels, so it both contains more and reduces the projected line. It runs M to 2XL.
Sure Cover Bra is full coverage, which is exactly what the name describes, and runs M to 3XL.
For a fuller bust that needs real cup depth, Plus Size Sculpting Bra runs XL to 5XL.
The styles to avoid for this
A plunge is cut low at the centre and across the top by design, so it is the wrong tool here. Plunge Lite is excellent under a deep V neckline and not the answer for a double-bust line. Same for anything described as demi or balconette.
Questions women ask us
Should I go up a band size too?
Only if the band is riding up or feels tight. If the band is firm and level, change the cup alone.
I went up a cup and now there is gaping at the top. What now?
That means the cup is now slightly too large for your shape, and a moulded style will fit better than a soft one. Seamless Contour Bra is the usual answer.
Does this mean I have been in the wrong size for years?
Possibly, and if so you are in a very large group. Most women we measure move up a cup, a band, or both.
Can you check it for me?
Yes. Two measurements and a mirror, about ten minutes, in any SHAPE store. It is private and you never have to buy.
