Push-Up Bras Are Sized Differently: Use Your Exact Cup

The short answer: Our standard advice on seamless styles is that if you are between sizes you go up one. On a push-up, do the opposite and stay exact. A push-up cup is moulded to lift from one specific position, and a size up slides, gapes at the centre and stops lifting. Comfort Curve Bra runs bands 38 to 44, cups C to DD.

Women who have learned the size-up rule from us then apply it to a push-up and find it does not work. That is our fault for not being clearer. The rule has an exception and this is it.

Why the two rules differ

A seamless bra is stretch fabric with a soft or lightly moulded cup. It adapts to you, so a size up is forgiving: the fabric takes up the slack and the band still holds.

A push-up is engineering. The cup is moulded at an angle, with padding concentrated at the bottom and the outside, specifically to move tissue up and inward. That only happens if your breast sits in the part of the cup the designer intended. A size up and it sits lower and further out, which is exactly where the lift is not.

So on a push-up, exact is not a preference. It is the mechanism.

The rules, side by side

Kind of bra If you are between sizes Examples
Seamless, soft or lightly moulded Go up one Seamless Air Bra, Seamless Contour Bra, Signature Seamless Bra
Push-up and band-and-cup Stay at your exact band and cup Comfort Curve Bra
Plunge Stay exact. The centre gapes if it is loose Plunge Lite
Sports, pull-on Go up one if unsure, there are no hooks to adjust Easy Fit Sports Bra

How band-and-cup sizing works here

Comfort Curve Bra is sized by band and cup rather than by letter, which is more precise. It runs bands 38 to 44, cups C to DD.

So you need two numbers rather than one: your underbust measurement gives the band, and the difference between your bust and underbust gives the cup. As a guide, 34C maps to L in our seamless styles, and a cup of D or above pushes you up a letter. It is a guide and not a rule, which is why we measure.

Most styles run M to 3XL, with core styles reaching 5XL. Band-and-cup styles come in bands 34 to 44, cups A to DD.

A note on what lift actually is

Lift comes from structure, not from wire. Every SHAPE bra is wire-free, and the styles that lift do it with a moulded cup, a wide firm band and padding placed where it does work: Plus Size Sculpting Bra, Seamless Contour Bra, Sure Cover Bra.

If your bust is smaller and you want shape, the answer is heavier padding rather than a smaller size. Going down a size compresses; it does not shape.

Questions women ask us

I am between a 38 and a 40 band. Which do I take?

On a push-up, measure again rather than choose. The band should be firm and level on the loosest hook, so a careful measurement usually resolves it.

Can I wear a push-up every day?

You can, though most women find a full-coverage style more comfortable over fifteen hours.

Is a push-up the only way to get lift?

No. Plus Size Sculpting Bra, Sure Cover Bra both lift through structure, and both run larger sizes.

Where can I get measured for a band-and-cup size?

Any SHAPE store. It takes about ten minutes, it is free and private, and you never have to buy.
