Bras and Posture: What a Good Fit Can and Can't Do

Back view of the SHAPE Sure Cover Bra, showing the wide band and shoulder straps

The short answer: When a band fits, it carries most of the weight at your ribcage and your shoulders stop compensating. Women often say they feel they are standing straighter afterwards, and that is a reasonable thing to notice. A bra is not a treatment, and we are not going to tell you it corrects anything.

Women ask us this in the fitting room, usually having read something online that promised more than it should. We would rather give you the honest version, which is still useful, than the version that sells more bras.

What a well-fitted bra actually does

Around eighty per cent of the support in a well-fitted bra comes from the band around your ribcage. When the band is firm and level, that is where the weight sits.

When the band is loose, the straps take over. Weight moves to two narrow points on your shoulders, and your body does what bodies do under uneven load: it adjusts. Shoulders roll forward slightly, and by the afternoon you are holding yourself differently than you would otherwise.

Fixing the band removes that. It is a comfort change, and for a fuller bust it can be a large one.

What it does not do

It does not correct posture as a condition. It does not treat back pain. It does not strengthen anything. If you have persistent back, neck or shoulder pain, that is a conversation for a doctor or a physiotherapist, and a bra is not a substitute for it.

We are a bra shop. Section 44 of the Consumers' Rights Protection Act takes a dim view of health claims, and so do we, so you will not find any here.

Which styles take the load off the shoulders

Bra Sizes What it does
Sure Cover Bra M to 3XL Full coverage with a wide underband. Our most-bought bra.
Longwear Bra M to 5XL The widest band we make, and the fullest size run.
Plus Size Sculpting Bra XL to 5XL Widest straps and deepest cups, for a fuller bust.
Seamless Contour Bra M to 3XL Wide adjustable straps on a moulded cup.

All of them are wire-free. Wire does not lift; structure does.

The three-finger check

One thing you can do today. Put two fingers under each strap. If you cannot slide them under, the straps are too tight and almost certainly doing the band's job. Loosen the straps, then tighten the band until it is firm and level all the way round.

If the band cannot get firm on the tightest hook, it is the wrong size, and no adjustment will fix it.

Questions women ask us

Will a bra help my back pain?

A bra that fits is more comfortable, and many women with a fuller bust notice a difference in how their shoulders feel. Pain itself is for a doctor, not for us.

Are posture-correcting bras real?

Garments sold that way exist. We do not make one and we would not describe a bra that way, because we cannot stand behind the claim.

Does a sports bra help more?

For activity, yes, because it limits movement. For a long day at a desk, a wide firm band is more comfortable.

How do I know if my band is carrying the weight?

Two fingers under the straps, and the band firm and level. If you want it checked properly, come in. Ten minutes, free.
