Bashundhara City: A Letter from Monoshita

On 18 September we opened SHAPE at Bashundhara City. It is our seventh store in Dhaka, and I still find that sentence a little hard to write.

I started SHAPE in 2019 because I could not find a bra that fit me. It was not a business plan. It was a problem I had, and a quiet suspicion that I was not the only one. I was not. In the years since, I have sat with thousands of women who had been uncomfortable for years and assumed it was their fault. It never was. Your body was never the problem. Nobody had ever measured you properly, and nobody had told you that a bra is supposed to feel like nothing.

Three stores in one season

Bailey Road in August. Banani Super Market in the first week of September. And now Bashundhara City. I did not expect to write those three sentences in one season, and I want to be honest about how it happened.

None of it came from us. It came from women who walked in, let a stranger with a measuring tape help them, and then told a sister, a colleague, a friend. More than 200,000 women have found their fit with us. Over 51,000 of them talk to each other every day in our Girl Talk community, about the things none of us were taught to talk about. We are only the room where it happens.

What will not change

A new store is not a new promise. It is one more place to keep the same one.

• A private fitting. A curtain, a soft tape, and a woman who knows what she is doing. Nothing about your body is discussed where anyone else can hear it.
• Help, never pressure. We want you to leave knowing your size. You do not have to buy anything.
• An easy exchange. If the fit is not right, exchange within 7 days of delivery, as long as the piece is unworn and unwashed.

Seven years and seven stores later, that is still the whole idea. Everything else is detail.

To every woman who has trusted us

Thank you. I know what it costs to walk into a shop and ask a question about your own body, in this city, in this culture. I know what it costs to type that question into a chat window at midnight. Every time you did, you gave us something we do not take lightly. You also made a store possible for the next woman, the one who has not walked in yet and thinks discomfort is just how it is.

We will keep earning it. When we get something wrong, and we do, tell us plainly and we will fix it plainly. That is the only way I know how to build this.
