Coffee, Beige, Brown, Black: Your Shade
The short answer: "nude" should mean the shade closest to your skin, not one standard beige. Under white or thin clothes, a bra in your own skin tone disappears, while a white bra often shows as a bright outline. So the right nude for you might be beige for some women and coffee for most.
If you have ever put on a white kameez and seen your bra through it, the problem usually wasn't the kameez or your body. It was the shade.
Why a white bra shows under white clothes
Thin fabric lets light through. Against your skin, a white bra is brighter than everything around it, so its edges show. A shade close to your skin blends in instead. That is why fit advisors almost always suggest a nude, not white, for white and light-coloured outfits.
Nude isn't one colour, so we don't call any colour nude
For a long time, "nude" in lingerie meant one pale beige. That was never going to work for most women in Bangladesh. So at SHAPE we name every shade by what it actually is: beige, coffee, black, pink. Nude is not a colour on our shelf. The shade most women end up choosing
Coffee. On our four biggest bras, coffee outsells every other colour, including black. It sits closest to the skin on the chest for most women here, which is why it vanishes under a white or pastel kameez. One more shade surprises people: maroon also disappears under white. A deep, warm colour reads as shadow through thin fabric, where white reads as a bright outline. If you are between coffee and something lighter, our advisors will usually point you to coffee.
How to pick your shade
- Look in daylight. Indoor bulbs make everything warmer or cooler than it is.
- Compare with the skin on your chest, not your face or hands. That is the skin the bra sits against.
- Choose the shade that almost disappears. If you are between two, the slightly deeper one usually shows less under white.
As a rough guide: lighter skin often suits beige; medium and deeper skin almost always suits coffee. Your own eye in the mirror is the real test.
Which shade under which outfit
- White or light kameez, kurti or shirt: your nude shade.
- Thin, sheer or georgette fabrics: your nude shade, in a seamless style, so neither colour nor seams show. What is a seamless bra?
- Black or dark clothes: black works well.
- Bright colours: your skin shade is still the safest; a matching colour can also work.
- Maroon and deep-red outfits, or white if you already own a maroon bra: maroon works.
