Buying Your Own Bra for the First Time at 50

Storefront of SHAPE Lingerie Bailey Road, with a woman walking in past the fitting poster

The short answer: Women walk into SHAPE in their forties, fifties and sixties having never once been measured. Their bras were bought by a mother, a husband or a daughter, or picked from a market pile by guess. If that is you, you are in a much larger group than you think, and nothing about it is unusual here.

A woman came in with her daughter and let her daughter do the talking. When we offered to measure her she said she had never had it done, and then apologised for it. That apology is the thing we would most like to get rid of.

Why it happens

For a generation of women here, a bra was not something you chose. It was bought in bulk at a market by size guess, or brought back from a trip by a relative, or handed down. The category had no fitting rooms and no conversation around it, so there was nowhere to learn what fit should feel like.

So the absence of a measurement is not carelessness. It is the straightforward result of a category that never offered one.

What to expect, step by step

  1. You ask, or we offer. Either is fine. You can also message first if walking in feels like a lot.
  2. A private room. Door closed, one fit advisor, nobody else.
  3. Two measurements. Under the bust and across the bust. You can stay in light clothing.
  4. Two or three bras to try chosen for your shape and for what you actually wear.
  5. You decide. It is free, and you never have to buy. Many women take the size away and think.

What usually changes

Most women who have never been measured are in a band too large and a cup too small, because that is the combination that feels loose rather than tight when you are guessing. The usual result is a smaller band and a larger cup, and the first thing women say is that it feels firm in a way they were not expecting.

Firm and level around the ribcage is correct. Around eighty per cent of support comes from the band, not the straps, which is why a loose band has meant years of straps digging into shoulders.

Questions women ask us

Is it too late to start caring about this?

No. A bra is on your body fifteen or sixteen hours a day. Getting it right changes those hours whatever your age.

Can my daughter come in with me?

Of course, and many do. She can be in the room or wait outside, whichever you prefer.

Will I be the oldest woman there?

Almost certainly not. Our range spans decades, and a good share of the women we measure are in their forties and fifties.

Can someone measure me at home instead?

We can do it on video over WhatsApp, or talk you through two measurements without video. Whatever is comfortable.
