Median Age 28, Sizes L to 2XL: Who Actually Shops at SHAPE
The short answer: Our own data, not an estimate: the centre of SHAPE is L to 2XL, the median age is 28, and around two-thirds of the women buying in any given month are buying from us for the first time. That is not a niche at either end. It is the middle of Bangladesh.
Brands in this category tend to describe who they are for in adjectives. We would rather publish the actual distribution, partly because it is more useful and partly because it corrects an assumption we hear a lot.
What the numbers say
| What we see | |
|---|---|
| Size centre | L to 2XL is where most of our volume sits |
| Median age | 28 |
| First-time buyers | Around two-thirds in a given month |
| Repeat buyers | Roughly a quarter come back to buy again |
| Largest city | Dhaka, with seven stores |
| Women fitted to date | More than 200,000 |
Why the middle is the interesting part
The two ends of a size range get the attention. A brand either positions itself for a fuller bust or for a smaller one, and the language follows.
What we found when we started measuring at scale is that the problem was not concentrated at the ends. It was everywhere, and it was worst for a body shape that imported charts handle badly: a lean torso with a relatively fuller bust, which is extremely common here and sits right in the middle of the range.
So the useful thing was not a specialist range. It was a size run that goes wide in both directions. Most styles run M to 3XL, with core styles reaching 5XL. Band-and-cup styles come in bands 34 to 44, cups A to DD.
What two-thirds first-time means
It means most women walking into a SHAPE store on a given day have never been measured by us, and often have never been measured at all. Their last bra was bought by size guess, in a market or on a trip, or by a relative.
It also means the fitting is doing most of the work rather than the marketing. Most of these women arrive because another woman told them to, which is why Girl Talk, our community of more than 51,000 women, matters more to us than any advertising we have run.
What we do with this
It decides stock depth, which sizes we hold most of, and which styles get the full size run. It is also why Longwear Bra runs M to 5XL and Plus Size Sculpting Bra runs XL to 5XL: the range has to extend past the centre even though the centre is where the volume is.
We publish this because women ask whether SHAPE is “for” them, and a distribution answers that better than an adjective.
Questions women ask us
Is SHAPE a plus-size brand?
No, and not a petite one either. The volume centre is L to 2XL and the range runs wider in both directions.
Do you fit women over 50?
Yes, regularly. The median is 28 and the range spans decades.
What is the largest size you make?
Most styles run M to 3XL, with core styles reaching 5XL. Band-and-cup styles come in bands 34 to 44, cups A to DD.
Where does this data come from?
Our own sales and fitting records. We are not publishing anything we cannot trace.
