Under a Fitted Dress: Smooth Shoulder, Clean Silhouette
The short answer: A fitted dress shows the edge of everything underneath it. What works is a seamless bra with bonded edges so there is no seam to print, if you want a continuous line through the waist, Tummy Tucking Bodyshaper under it.
The dress fits. You know it fits, because it fitted in the shop. Then at home there is a ridge across the back and a line at the bust, and the conclusion is that something has changed about you. It is the base.
The three lines a fitted dress shows
The cup edge. A stitched or hemmed cup edge prints through. A bonded or laser-cut edge does not. This is the single biggest difference between a bra that works under a fitted dress and one that does not.
The band at the back. A band that is too tight creates a ridge above and below it. A wide band in the correct size spreads the pressure and disappears.
The hook ridge. Three rows of hooks sit flatter than you would expect, but only if the band is the right size. On a too-tight band the hooks are the first thing to show.
What to wear
| Layer | What | Sizes |
|---|---|---|
| Bra, smooth and light | Seamless Air Bra | M to 3XL |
| Bra, smooth with shape | Seamless Contour Bra | M to 3XL |
| Bra, deep neckline | Plunge Lite | M to XL |
| Shapewear, if you want it | Tummy Tucking Bodyshaper | M to 2XL |
Most styles run M to 3XL, with core styles reaching 5XL. Band-and-cup styles come in bands 34 to 44, cups A to DD. Between sizes on a seamless style, go up one.
Shapewear, honestly
Shapewear smooths a line. It does not fix a bra that is the wrong size, and it will not make a dress fit that does not fit. If you put shapewear over a badly fitting bra you now have two layers producing one line.
So the order is: get the bra right, see the dress, then decide whether you want shapewear. A lot of women find they do not once the bra is sorted. Those who do want it mostly want it for a long event where sitting and standing all evening matters more than anything else.
Backless, halter and strapless
A backless or halter dress needs a strapless, and the Bare Skin Strapless Bra is the only one we make. Message us to check it is available in your size before you plan around it.
For a deep V at the front with normal straps, Plunge Lite is the style built for it. Stay at your exact size on a plunge rather than going up.
Questions women ask us
Will a bodyshaper be too hot for a long evening?
It is a layer, so yes, it is warmer. Choose it for events where the line matters more than the heat, and skip it under anything loose.
Can I wear a regular bra under a bodysuit?
Yes. The bodysuit handles the midsection and the bra handles the bust. They do different jobs.
What stops the ridge at the back?
A wide band in your correct size. Not a tighter band, which is the usual instinct and makes it worse.
How do I know my correct band size?
